Frequently Asked Questions

What is carpet twist?

Carpet twist is the number of turns used when creating the carpet fiber or yarn. Generally, the more twists on a fiber, the better performance of the carpet. Fibers that are twisted more tightly have a different "feel" than looser twists.

How accurate is a rating system?

A rating system is developed by the manufacturer and is based on its individual standards. Due to discrepancies in testing methods and customer reviews, these rating systems cannot be compared across manufacturers.

Can you compare products solely based on technical specifications?

While technical specifications can give you a general idea, there are a variety of factors that play into each carpet. Two carpets may have the same specifications but if they're made from different fibers they could act completely different in the same environment.

If I can bend the carpet and see the backing, is it low quality?

Not at all! All carpets, excluding woven carpets, are made with spaces between the tufts. When checking for thickness or density, place the carpet on a flat surface and stick your fingers in the pile. Generally, denser carpets perform better.

What is the difference between engineered and solid hardwood?

Engineered hardwood is comprised of multiple layers of plywood that are then firmly pressed together to create a solid, stable core. Layers of hardwood are then placed on the top and bottom of the core helps to reinforce the board.

Solid hardwood is exactly how it sounds. Each plank is created from a single piece of solid wood.

Where can I install hardwood?

Engineered hardwood can be installed on any level of the house. The flexibility of the layers allows engineered hardwoods to be placed in basements, over concrete subfloors and even over radiant heating systems.

Solid hardwoods are more susceptible to changes in moisture and temperature so solid hardwood floors are only recommended for rooms at the ground level or above.

How do I clean my hardwood floor?

First of all, never use a wet mop on a hardwood surface. It will raise the grain and may permanently damage the surface. Refer to the manufacturer for its recommended cleaning products.

How Important is room temperature and humidity?

Solid hardwood floors are more susceptible to temperature and humidity changes than engineered hardwood floors, but all floors are affected by drastic climate changes. During hot and humid months, a dehumidifier may be required while in colder, dryer months a humidifier may be necessary.

Can I repair a chipped floor?

Yes. If the chip is smaller than an inch in diameter, you can use a filling putty to fix the damage. If it is too large to repair with putty, replacing the plank may be necessary. Always refer to the manufacturers installation guide for additional information and recommendations.

Where can laminate be installed?

The flexibility and durability of laminate allows the flooring to be installed anywhere in the house including basements, bathrooms and mudrooms.

Can I install laminate over my current flooring?

Yes - for the most part. Laminate floors can be installed over a variety of floors like ceramic tile, vinyl and hardwood. We recommend having a professional installer inspect your floor and make sure it is suitable for this type of installation.

Can pets damage laminate floors?

Yes. While laminate is resistant to scratches and scrapes, untrimmed nails and claws can damage laminate flooring.

How do I repair scratches in my laminate floor?

For surface scratches, there are special color matching pencils that may be used to cover up any blemishes.

For deeper scratches and chips, you can replace the whole plank without disrupting the rest of the floor. While there are tools to aid in plank replacement, we recommend the replacement being performed by professional installer.

What is luxury vinyl tile?

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is a premium vinyl that showcases visuals, warranties and installation options that can't be offered in traditional vinyl offerings.

Where can I install LVT in my home?

LVT's flexibility allows it to be installed on all levels of the home and over most subfloors. We recommend having a professional installer survey your subfloor before installing any new LVT.

How do I clean my LVT floor?

To find appropriate cleaning products, we recommend referring to your LVT manufacturer for suggested products. Make sure not to use any detergents, abrasive cleaners or "mop and shine" products. Never use paste wax or solvent-based polishes when trying to restore a shine to your floor.

Can scratches and dents be repaired?

If damaged, the area can be repaired by replacing the tile or plank. Make sure to clean the subfloor and remove any dirt or debris before replacing the plank.

What could cause ceramic tile to crack?

There are a few possibilities but most often if the crack continues from one tile to another - through the grout joint - there is a problem with the substrate. There is also the possibility of a fractured tile. Both problems are able to be solved but we recommend having a professional installer handle the repairs.

Where should I install glazed versus unglazed tile and why?

Unglazed tiles are recommended for most horizontal projects on both the interior and exterior of your home. Porcelain tiles are recommended for any situations that may require horizontal placement or freeze/thaw conditions.

What kind of tile should I use in the kitchen?

Generally, manufacturers recommend double glazed or glazes fired at higher temperatures due to increased scratch resistance.

Do I need a rug pad?

While not required, we strongly recommend the use of a rug pad. These pads protect your floors from scratching or color transfer as well as extra slip resistance.

Can I use my rug outside?

It depends on the type of rug. Certain rug types and materials are made specifically for outdoor use.

What type of rug should I use for high traffic areas?

While many rugs work well in high traffic areas, woven and printed rugs tend to perform the best.

What is the best rug to use with pets?

A variety of rugs work well with pets but we recommend either woven or printed rugs. We advise against looped carpets as the loops tend to be pulled or snagged by larger pets.
